Benny Spellman (born December 11, 1931 – died June 3, 2011) was an American singer. He was famous for his Rhythm & Blues (R&B) music. Benny Spellman is best known for his songs "Lipstick Traces (on a Cigarette)" and "Fortune Teller". Both of these popular songs came out in 1962.

A famous songwriter named Allen Toussaint wrote both "Lipstick Traces" and "Fortune Teller". "Lipstick Traces" became a hit song. It reached number 28 on the U.S. Billboard R&B singles chart. It also reached number 80 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song "Fortune Teller" became very popular too. Many other artists later sang it, including famous bands like The Who and The Rolling Stones.

Early Life and Music Career

Benny Spellman was born in Pensacola, Florida. He started his music career in the 1960s. He worked with many talented musicians. Some of these included Allen Toussaint and Earl King. He also worked with Huey "Piano" Smith and Ernie K-Doe. Later, he collaborated with Wilson Pickett, The Neville Brothers, and The O'Jays.

Benny Spellman also sang backing vocals for other artists. He sang on Ernie K-Doe's number one hit song, "Mother in Law". In 1965, he recorded a song called "Word Game" with Atlantic Records. After this, he mostly stopped making music. He then started working in the beer industry.

Later Years and Legacy

In 1988, a record company called Collectables Records released an album. This album featured 16 of Benny Spellman's songs from the 1960s. It was a way to look back at his music. In 2009, he received a special honor. He was added to the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. This recognized his important contributions to music.

Benny Spellman passed away in June 2011. He was 79 years old. He died due to a health issue. He was a Catholic.
