What is Benson Village Like?

Benson is a town in northwestern Rutland County. It sits on the eastern shore of southern Lake Champlain. The town was officially started in 1780. People began settling there in 1782.

Early Roads and Farming

For many years, the main road was Stage Road. It was finished in 1790. This road was the most important north-south route. It ran along the east side of Lake Champlain. In the 1800s, Benson was mostly a farming area. There were also some small factories. These factories were located on the Hubbardton River. This river is east of the village. Goods from these factories were sent to a port on the lake. This port was west of the village.

A Look at Old Buildings

Benson Village was most successful in the 1840s. You can see this in the buildings from that time. Many homes were built in the Greek Revival style. This style was very popular back then. Later, Stage Road became less important. A new road, Vermont Route 22A, took its place. This change meant fewer new buildings were needed in the village.

The Heart of the Village

The main spot in Benson Village is where Stage Road and Lake Road meet. Here you will find the Benson Village Store. There is also the post office and the Wheel Inn. The village extends north from this meeting point. It goes roughly to Hulett Hill Road. Many buildings were built in the 1840s. Others were built between the 1870s and 1880s. They often show a mix of Greek Revival and Italianate styles. One special building is the Benson Village school. It is an elementary school built in 1935. It has a Colonial Revival design.
