Benton is a city in Franklin County, Illinois, and it's the main town for the county. About 6,700 people lived there in 2020. The city was named after Thomas Hart Benton, a senator from Missouri.
Benton started as a village in 1841. It became a city in 1902. The city grew a lot because it had plenty of coal, many railroads, and good farming land. The Franklin County Courthouse, a beautiful old building, was built in 1874-75 and was a central part of the town.

It was ready just in time for people traveling to see the total solar eclipse of 2017.
