Bernal, officially known as San Sebastián Bernal, is a historic village in the Mexican state of Querétaro. Its name comes from the Basque word Vernal, meaning "place of stones or boulders." A Spanish soldier named Alonso Cabrera founded the village in 1642.
Bernal is about 40 minutes by car from Santiago de Querétaro, the state capital. It's also about two and a half hours from Mexico City. The village is part of the Ezequiel Montes municipality. It is close to other towns like Colón and Cadereyta.
The village is famous for its huge rock, the Peña de Bernal. This giant stone is the third tallest monolith on Earth.
What's in a Name?
The name Bernal has a special meaning. In the Otomi language, it's called "De'hendo." In the Chichimeca language, it's "Ma'hando." Both names mean "In the middle of two." This likely refers to its location.

In 2005, Bernal received a special title: Pueblo Mágico. This means "Magical Town" in Spanish. The Mexican Secretariat of Tourism (SECTUR) gives this title to places that are unique.
