Bernard Makuza was born on September 30, 1962. He is a well-known politician from Rwanda. He served as the Prime Minister of Rwanda for many years. His time as Prime Minister was from March 8, 2000, to October 6, 2011. Later, he became the President of the Senate of Rwanda. He held this important role from October 14, 2014, to October 17, 2019.

Early Life and Family
Bernard Makuza's father was Anastase Makuza. His father was also a minister in the government. This was during the time when Grégoire Kayibanda was president. Bernard Makuza followed in his father's footsteps. He attended the Saint Léon Minor Seminary of Kabgayi.
Political Journey
Bernard Makuza was once a member of a political group. It was called the Republican Democratic Movement (MDR). This party was later closed down on April 14, 2003. This happened because of its past actions. These actions were seen as harmful to the country's unity. Mr. Makuza left the MDR before he became Prime Minister. By 2006, he did not belong to any political party.
Becoming Prime Minister
Before becoming Prime Minister, Mr. Makuza worked as an ambassador. He was the Rwandan Ambassador to Burundi. After that, he became the Ambassador to Germany. In March 2000, President Pasteur Bizimungu chose him to be Prime Minister. The previous Prime Minister, Pierre-Célestin Rwigema, had resigned. He had faced a lot of criticism.
On March 8, 2008, a new government was formed. Bernard Makuza continued to lead it as Prime Minister. This government included 21 ministers. It also had six secretaries of state.
Role in the Senate
On October 6, 2011, President Paul Kagame appointed a new Prime Minister. Pierre Habumuremyi took over from Mr. Makuza. Bernard Makuza then moved to the Senate of Rwanda. In the Senate, he first served as Vice-President. His job was to oversee laws and government actions.
Later, he was chosen to be the President of the Senate. This happened on October 14, 2014. He received 25 out of 26 votes. There were no other candidates running against him. He was then sworn into his new role.
