Early Life and Family
Bernard Makuza was born in Butare, Rwanda. His father, Anastase Makuza, was also a politician who served as a minister. Bernard Makuza went to the same school as his father, called Saint Léon Minor Seminary of Kabgayi.
Political Journey
Before becoming prime minister, Bernard Makuza was part of a political group called the Republican Democratic Movement (MDR). This party was later closed down in 2003 because of serious problems with its past actions. Bernard Makuza had already left the party before he was chosen to be prime minister. By 2006, he said he did not belong to any political party.
Becoming Prime Minister
Before he was chosen as prime minister, Bernard Makuza worked as an ambassador for Rwanda. He was the Rwandan Ambassador to Burundi and then to Germany.
In March 2000, President Pasteur Bizimungu chose Makuza to be the new prime minister. This happened after the previous prime minister, Pierre-Célestin Rwigema, stepped down. Makuza continued to lead the government, and in March 2008, a new government was formed with him still in charge. This government included 21 ministers and six secretaries of state.
Serving in the Senate
On October 6, 2011, President Paul Kagame appointed Pierre Habumuremyi to take over as prime minister. Bernard Makuza was then appointed to the Senate of Rwanda.
In the Senate, Makuza first served as the Vice-President for Legislation and Government Oversight. This role meant he helped check new laws and how the government was working. Later, he was chosen to be the President of the Senate. He won with almost all the votes, getting 25 out of 26 votes. He was sworn into this important role on October 14, 2014.
