Sir Bernard was the son of Sir Robert Waley Cohen and Alice Beddington. He went to Clifton College, a well-known school, where he lived in Polack's House.
His Important Roles in London
Sir Bernard held many important jobs in the City of London:
- He was an Alderman for the Portsoken Ward from 1949 to 1984. An Alderman is like a senior council member who helps run the city.
- He served as Sheriff of London from 1955 to 1956. The Sheriff is an old and respected role, helping with legal duties in the city.
- His most famous role was Lord Mayor of London from 1960 to 1961. The Lord Mayor is the leader of the City of London Corporation and represents the city.
- He was also one of the Lieutenants of the City of London from 1949 until his death in 1991. This role involves helping the Lord Mayor and representing the Crown.
Sometimes, as an Alderman, he even acted as a judge in the Mansion House Justice Room.
His Work in Business and Education
Sir Bernard was a director of the Palestine Corporation. This company, started in 1922, aimed to help businesses grow in a region called Palestine. He also played a big part at University College London. He was on the College Committee from 1953 to 1980. He served as Treasurer from 1962 to 1970, Vice-Chairman in 1970, and then Chairman from 1971 to 1980.
Titles and Family Life
Sir Bernard was given the title of Knight Bachelor in 1957, which means he was knighted by the Queen. In 1961, he was made a Baronet of Honeymead in Somerset. This is a special hereditary title.
He married Joyce Constance Ina, whose father was Harry Nathan, 1st Baron Nathan. They had four children:
