Bernardino Butinone was an Italian painter who lived during the exciting Renaissance period. He was born around 1435 or 1436 and passed away about 1507 or 1508. Bernardino mostly worked in and around the city of Milan, creating many beautiful artworks.
He was born in Treviglio, a town in the Lombardy region of Italy. His father's name was Jacopo da Treviglio. Because of his hometown, Bernardino was also known as Bernardo da Treviglio.
Learning to Paint
Bernardino Butinone learned his skills from famous artists. He was a student of Vincenzo Foppa, who was a well-known painter at the time. Later, Bernardino himself became a teacher to other artists, including Bramantino. He also worked closely with another painter named Bernardo Zenale.
Some people believe he also trained with Vincenzo Civerchio. Bernardino and Civerchio worked together on several projects in Milan. From 1491 to 1493, they painted the ceiling of the Grifi Chapel. This chapel is located inside the San Pietro in Gessate church in Milan.
Famous Artworks
One of Bernardino Butinone's most important works is a large altarpiece. This artwork is called the polyptych of San Martino. A polyptych is a painting made up of several panels joined together. This special piece was ordered in 1485 for a church in his hometown of Treviglio.
Butinone also painted a series of smaller pictures that are very charming. These paintings show different moments from the life of Jesus Christ. Today, these small panels are kept in various art collections around the world.
