Bernardo Zenale (born around 1460, died 1526) was a talented Italian artist. He was both a painter and an architect. He lived during the exciting time of the Italian Renaissance. Zenale created many beautiful artworks, often working with other famous artists of his time.

Zenale's Life and Art

Early Life and Collaborations

Bernardo Zenale was born in a town called Treviglio in Lombardy, Italy. In 1485, he finished a very large painting called a polyptych for the church of St. Martin. He worked on this big project with his friend, Bernardino Butinone. It is thought that Zenale learned his art skills from Vincenzo Civerchio.

Later, Zenale helped decorate the Certosa di Pavia, a famous monastery. He was also hired by Ludovico Sforza, who was the Duke of Milan. The Duke asked him to paint a room in the Castello Sforzesco, a large castle in Milan. Zenale and Butinone also painted beautiful pictures on the walls (frescoes) in the Grifi Chapel. This chapel is inside the church of San Pietro in Gessate.

Changing Styles

After about 1500, Zenale's painting style began to change. He moved away from the style of Butinone. Instead, he started to show a strong influence from the famous artist Leonardo da Vinci. You can see this new style in a large painting he made in 1502. This painting was for the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception in Cantù.

Zenale was also influenced by the style of Bernardino Luini. Some of his works, like the Pala Busti and the large Annunciation, are now in the Pinacoteca di Brera art gallery. These paintings are so similar to Luini's style that people sometimes debate who painted them!

Later Works and Leadership

Zenale also worked in Brescia, where he painted a notable work called Deposition. This painting is in the church of St. John the Evangelist. In 1510, he painted a Madonna with Child between St. Ambrose and St. Jerome. This painting was for the church of St. Francis in Milan, but it is now in Denver, USA.

In 1522, Zenale took on a very important role. He replaced Giovanni Antonio Amadeo in leading the construction work of the Duomo di Milano. This is the famous cathedral in Milan.
