His Early Life and Career
Bernardo Verbitsky was a journalist for a newspaper called Noticias Gráficas. He also joined the "Buenos Aires Lunfardo's Academy." This group studied Lunfardo, which is a special slang used in Buenos Aires. Verbitsky wrote a lot about the city of Buenos Aires. He often wrote about its daily life and its famous tango music. One of his novels, Calles de tango, was even made into a movie in 1958. The movie was called Una cita con la vida (A date with life).
Famous Books and Their Impact
One of Verbitsky's most famous books was Villa Miseria también es América. This book was published in 1957. The title means "Povertyville is also America." This book was so impactful that it gave a popular name to the shanty towns in Argentina. These poor neighborhoods are still called villas miseria today. Bernardo Verbitsky passed away in Buenos Aires in 1979. His son, Horacio Verbitsky, also became a well-known journalist.
