A Young Noble's Life

Bernat Guillem d'Entença was born in 1226. He belonged to the important House of Entença. His father was Bernat Guillem de Montpeller, also known as Bernat Guillem I d'Entença. His mother was Jusiana d'Entença. Both his parents were related to James I the Conqueror, a famous king.

Early Challenges

Bernat's father was a brave warrior. He fought in the Reconquista, which was a long series of wars. These wars aimed to take back lands in Spain from the Moors. His father helped conquer Majorca and Valencia. Sadly, he died in 1238 after the Battle of the Puig.

Bernat Guillem d'Entença was only about 10 or 11 years old when his father passed away. He inherited his father's lands and titles. Even though he was very young, he was expected to join the wars. Because he was a child, his relatives, Berenguer and Gombau d'Entença, fought for him. They represented the House of Entença in battles.

Growing Influence

After the Moors were defeated in Valencia, Bernat's family gained a lot of new land. This made their family even more powerful. In 1242, Bernat married Alamanda de Sant Martí. She came from another important noble family. As a wedding gift, called a dowry, she brought the towns of Castellnou and Rafals. This marriage helped his family become even more important. It also made their presence stronger in Valencia.

Fighting for the Crown

Between 1250 and 1260, Bernat helped the Kingdom of Castille. They were also fighting against the Moors. He also helped draw the border between the Kingdom of Castille and the Crown of Aragon. In 1264, he tried to claim the territory of Montpellier. But he was not successful in this attempt.

Bernat continued to be an active leader. He took part in the conquest of the Kingdom of Murcia. This happened between 1265 and 1266. In 1273, he protected the border set by the Treaty of Almizra. This treaty was important for keeping peace with the Kingdom of Castille. In 1284, he fought in the Siege of Albarracín (1284). He also helped create a peace treaty in 1289. This treaty was between Alfonso II the Chaste and the King of Castille.

Bernat Guillem d'Entença lived a long life of service. In 1300, he traveled to Cyprus. There, he became a Hospitaller, a member of a religious military order. He died in Cyprus that same year.
