Berryville is a small, unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that don't have their own local government. It is located in Richland County, Illinois, in the United States.

History of Berryville

Berryville first grew near a waterway called Bonpas Creek. This creek was very important for moving goods. People used it to transport things like grains, wood, and other natural resources by boat. These goods would travel downstream to other places.

However, over time, many trees in the area were cut down. This caused the soil to wash into the creek. The creek's channel became filled with dirt, making it too shallow for boats. Because of this, boat traffic eventually stopped.

What's in Berryville Today?

Even though it's a small community, Berryville is still active.

  • The community has the Berryville Christian Church.
  • It also has the Berryville Community Center. This center is a place where people can gather for events.
  • In 2003, a local business called Berryville Vineyards started. They sell wines made from grapes grown right there in the area.

Fun Community Events

The Berryville Community Center hosts two big events every year that bring people together.

Osmon Fox Hunters Association Field Trial

Every year around the Fourth of July holiday, the community center holds the Osmon Fox Hunters Association Field Trial and Bench Show. This event showcases coonhound dogs. People come to see these special hunting dogs and how well they perform.

Berryville Chowder

Another popular event is the Berryville Chowder. This happens every year on the Saturday before Labor Day. People serve a special kind of chowder that is popular in Southern Illinois. It's a great chance for everyone to enjoy good food and community spirit.
