Life and Early Photography
Bertha Zillessen was born on October 17, 1872, in Rheydt, which is part of Mönchengladbach, Germany. When she was a young woman, she moved to Witten. There, she started to learn all about photography.
She continued to improve her photography skills in other big cities. Bertha studied in Berlin and Düsseldorf. She even learned from a well-known photographer named Erwin Quedenfeldt.
Starting a Studio in Bautzen
Around 1908, Bertha moved to Bautzen. She moved with her partner, Margarethe Karow. Together, they opened a photography studio. At first, their business focused on taking portraits of people.
Soon, Bertha became very interested in taking pictures of landscapes. She became a successful photographer who created images for postcards. Her beautiful copper gravure images were printed by companies like Deutschen Heimatbilder and Saxon Heimatschutzverein. Bertha Zillessen is remembered as the first professional photographer in Bautzen.
Legacy
Bertha Zillessen passed away on January 13, 1936, in Bautzen. Many years later, in 2019, the Museum Bautzen held a special exhibition. This show looked back at all the amazing work she had created during her life.
