Bertrand, Count of Toulouse facts for kids
Bertrand of Toulouse (also known as Bertrand of Tripoli) was an important leader who lived a long time ago. He was a count, which is like a powerful ruler of a region. He became the Count of Toulouse and was the first Count of Tripoli to actually rule in the city of Tripoli itself. He passed away in the year 1112.
Early Life and Becoming a Count
Bertrand was the oldest son of Raymond IV, Count of Toulouse. His father left for a big journey called the First Crusade in 1095. Because of this, Bertrand started ruling Toulouse.
Between 1098 and 1100, his cousin Philippa, Countess of Toulouse and her husband William IX, Duke of Aquitaine took control of Toulouse for a short time. However, they later gave it back to Bertrand in 1100. They needed money for Duke William's own trip to the Holy Land.
Bertrand officially became the Count of Toulouse when his father, Raymond, died in 1105. A few years later, in 1108, Bertrand traveled to Tripoli to take control there too.
Capturing Tripoli
In 1109, Bertrand took over from his father's nephew, William II Jordan, who was the Count of Tripoli at the time. Bertrand worked with Baldwin I of Jerusalem, who was the king of Kingdom of Jerusalem. They also had help from many ships from Genoa.
Together, they launched a big attack called the Siege of Tripoli. On July 12, they successfully captured the city of Tripoli. This was a very important victory for Bertrand.
Family and Legacy
Bertrand married Helie of Burgundy in June 1095. She was the daughter of Odo I, Duke of Burgundy.
Bertrand continued to rule in Tripoli until he died in 1112. After his death, his son Pons became the new Count of Tripoli. His brother, Alfonso Jordan, took over as Count of Toulouse. However, Toulouse was again taken by Philippa and William after Bertrand's death.
