Berzercon ferdinandi is a super tiny creature, a type of mite. It's so small you'd need a microscope to see it clearly! This amazing mite is the only known species in its special group, called Berzercon. Scientists named it in 2013.

Where Does it Live?

This unique mite calls the North Island of New Zealand home. But it doesn't just live anywhere! Berzercon ferdinandi has a very specific place it likes to hang out: on large carabid beetles. Imagine a tiny mite hitching a ride on a much bigger beetle!

What Are Mites Anyway?

Mites are like tiny cousins of spiders and ticks. They belong to a group of animals called Arachnids. Most mites are incredibly small, often less than a millimeter long. They can live in all sorts of places, from soil and water to plants and even on other animals.

There are many different kinds of mites. Some mites eat plants, while others eat tiny bits of dead stuff. Some mites even live on other animals, like Berzercon ferdinandi does on beetles. Scientists are always discovering new types of mites and learning about their lives!
