Besboro Island is a small island in the Bering Sea, off the coast of Alaska. It is part of the Norton Sound. The island is about 11 miles (18 km) west of the mainland.

Besboro Island stretches from north to south. It is about 2 miles (3.2 km) long and half a mile (0.8 km) wide at its widest point. The island is very rocky and rises to a height of 903 feet (275 meters).

Who Owns and Uses the Island?

Besboro Island is part of the Nome Census Area, Alaska. Most of the island (90%) is owned by the Unalakleet Native Corporation. The Shaktoolik Native Corporation owns the remaining 10%.

Local people use the island for activities like hunting and fishing. It is also a safe place for large ships to anchor during bad weather. A sandy area on the northeast side of the island is a favorite spot for seals to rest.

History of Besboro Island

The island was named on September 12, 1778, by Captain James Cook. He was a famous explorer from the Royal Navy. He called it "Besborough Island."

Part of a Wildlife Refuge

Besboro Island is part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge helps protect many types of birds and marine animals.
