The Bethany Lutheran Church is a historic church building in Oilmont, Montana. It is made of wood and has been around for a long time. This special building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 14, 1993. This means it is an important place in history.
A Church with History
Many years ago, the Great Northern Railway built train tracks through this area. This brought many people from Scandinavia to settle in Toole County. These new settlers brought their religion with them. The Lutheran Church started to grow in the county around 1885.
Building the Church
More and more immigrants arrived in the 1910s. In 1911, Norwegian settlers formed a church group. This group later became the Bethany Lutheran Church. At first, they met in people's homes or at the local school.
In 1916, the church group bought some land to build their own church. But they faced some tough times with money. So, building the church was put on hold for a while.
A New Home for the Church
In 1923, a special group called the Ladies Aid stepped in. This group of women from the church bought a church building. It was then moved to the land the congregation owned the next year.
The final work on the church was finished in 1925. The Bethany Lutheran Church was an active place for worship until 1960. Then, its members joined with another church, St. Luke's Parish, in Shelby.
