Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church is a special old church in Coffeyville, Kansas. It's located at 202 West 12th Street. This area was once the main Black neighborhood of the city. The church was built in 1907. It became a nationally recognized historic place in 1995.
About the Church Building
The church building is made of brick and has one main floor. It looks like a mix of two old building styles. These are Romanesque Revival and Gothic Revival. Romanesque style often uses round arches. Gothic Revival has pointed arches and tall windows. The church sits on a strong foundation. This foundation is made of rough, textured limestone.
Why a New Church Was Built
Before this brick church, the congregation had a different church building. That first church was made of wood. It was built in 1882. Over time, the church community grew much larger. They needed a bigger space to worship. So, the new, larger brick church was built to replace the old one.
