Beulah Heights, California facts for kids
Beulah Heights was once a small community in Alameda County, California. Today, it is no longer a separate town but has become part of the larger city of Oakland.
Beulah Heights: A Look Back
Beulah Heights was located about 2 miles (3.2 km) northwest of Mills College. For a short time, from 1907 to 1911, it even had its own post office. This shows that it was a real, active community where people lived and worked.
A Special Home for Seniors
One of the most important buildings in Beulah Heights was called the Home for Aged and Infirm Colored People. This home was built in 1897. Back then, many places, including some nursing homes, were separated by race. This meant that elderly African Americans often couldn't get into the regular retirement homes because of their race.
To help their community, local leaders and religious groups within the African American community decided to build their own special place. The Home for Aged and Infirm Colored People was designed to be a safe and caring place for older people and those who needed a home and support. It was a very important place that showed how communities can come together to help those in need, especially when others are not able to get the care they deserve.
