Bevan John Docherty (born March 29, 1977) is a famous triathlete from New Zealand. A triathlete is an athlete who competes in a triathlon, which is a race made up of three different sports: swimming, cycling, and running. Bevan Docherty is well-known for winning medals at the Olympic Games. He also won a world championship title in triathlon.

Bevan Docherty's Early Life and Family

Bevan Docherty grew up in a town called Taupō, in New Zealand. He has a sister named Fiona. Their father, Ray, loved triathlons, and their mother, Irene, also trained and competed in the sport with them. This shows that sports were a big part of their family life. Bevan went to Tauhara College in Taupō.

Becoming a Champion Triathlete

Bevan Docherty became a professional triathlete in 2000. He quickly became one of the top athletes in the world. In 2004, he had a fantastic year. He won the ITU World Championship, which is a very important race for triathletes.

Olympic Success

Also in 2004, Bevan Docherty won a silver medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. He finished just behind another New Zealander, Hamish Carter. This was a huge achievement for both athletes and their country.

He continued his success by winning another silver medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Then, at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, he earned a bronze medal. Winning two Olympic medals shows how skilled and dedicated he was.

The Docherty Dares Programme

After his successful career, Bevan Docherty started a special project called "The Docherty Dares programme." This programme helps people in New Zealand achieve goals they might have thought were impossible. It's all about encouraging people to challenge themselves.

How the Programme Started

The idea for the programme came to Bevan when he saw a man named Scott Kotoul finishing a cycling race. Scott was very tired after cycling half the distance of the race. He said he would only try to do 40 kilometers the next year.

However, Bevan Docherty "dared" Scott to try the full 160-kilometer race instead. Scott accepted the challenge! This story inspired Bevan to create a programme that encourages others to push their limits and achieve great things.

Retirement

Bevan Docherty officially retired from professional triathlon in 2015. He left a lasting mark on the sport, inspiring many with his achievements and his positive attitude.
