Beverly Grigsby (born January 11, 1928) is an American composer and music expert. She is known for being a pioneer in electronic and computer music. This means she was one of the first people to create music using computers.

Early Life

Beverly Pinsky was born in Chicago, Illinois. She loved music and started studying it when she was a child. When she was 13, her family moved to California. She later graduated from Fairfax High School.

Education and Learning

Beverly Grigsby first went to the University of Southern California to study medicine. However, she also studied music composition, which is the art of creating music. She learned from a famous composer named Ernst Krenek.

She earned two degrees in music composition from California State University, Northridge. Later, she received her highest degree in music composition from the University of Southern California.

In the mid-1970s, she continued her studies. She learned how to create music using computers at Stanford University and M.I.T.. These are both very famous universities known for technology.

Career and Achievements

After finishing her studies, Grigsby became a music teacher at California State University, Northridge. She also started and led the Computer Music Studio there. This was a special place where students could learn to make music with computers.

In 1984, Beverly Grigsby made history. She composed the first ever opera score created entirely by a computer. An opera score is all the music written for an opera.

In 1985, she helped start the International Institute for the Study of Women in Music. This group helps people learn more about women composers and musicians.

She stopped teaching full-time in 1993. However, she kept teaching music privately and continued to compose. Her music has been played and enjoyed all over the world.
