Prince Bhisadej Rajani (Thai: ภีศเดช รัชนี; RTGS: Phisadet Ratchani) was a beloved prince of Thailand. He was born on 20 January 1922 and lived until 23 July 2022, making him one of the longest-living members of the Thai royal family. He was a close friend and cousin of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Prince Bhisadej was also a talented author. He played a very important role as one of the directors of the Royal Project Foundation. This project was started by the late King to help people in the mountains.

Early Life and School Days

Prince Bhisadej Rajani was the youngest son of Prince Rajani Chamcharas, the Prince of Bidyalongkorn. His mother was Mom Chao Barabimalabanna Voravan. He was also the great-grandson of Viceroy Pinklao. His older sister was Princess Vibhavadi Rangsit, a well-known writer.

He went to Debsirin School in Thailand. Later, he studied at Dulwich College in England. There, he was very active in sports like rugby, tennis, and squash. He even won a special gold medal called Victor Ludorum for being the best athlete among Thai students in the UK.

Joining the British Army

During World War II, Prince Bhisadej joined the British Army in 1943. He trained as a soldier and a British spy. He learned to trek up hills with heavy gear. He even hiked through the Himalayan Mountains for two weeks!

After his army training, he joined a secret group called the Free Thai Movement. This group worked against the Japanese during the war. After the war ended, he returned to Thailand. He worked for a few years as an officer with the Border Patrol Police in schools along Thailand's northern border.

Helping People: The Royal Project

Prince Bhisadej was a very close friend of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Their friendship began when the King was still a prince. In 1969, King Bhumibol Adulyadej started the Royal Project Foundation. This project was based in Fang District. Prince Bhisadej was put in charge of it.

The main goal of the Royal Project was to help mountain tribes. It encouraged them to stop growing opium. Instead, Prince Bhisadej taught them to grow valuable crops. These included strawberries, peaches, plums, and many other fruits and vegetables. He also led other projects to help farmers in the highlands.

Hobbies and Writing

When Prince Bhisadej worked in Chiang Mai Province, he lived a very simple life. He loved to read books, listen to music, and take photos. He had enjoyed photography since he was 14 years old. He especially liked taking pictures of flowers at the Royal Development Centres. His favorite flowers were the English roses at The Royal Agricultural Station Ang Khang.

He also enjoyed reading novels and history books. He liked stories about rural travels and the lives of farmers, especially in France and Spain.

His Book

Prince Bhisadej wrote a book in Thai called Cheewit Chun Chun (Thai: ชีวิตชั้น ๆ). It was published in 2002. He used the pen name P. of Pramualmak. The book was about his own life and also shared stories about Thai history from 100 years ago.

Prince Bhisadej was highly respected by the Thai people. He dedicated his life to helping others through King Bhumibol Adulyadej's Royal Projects. He turned 100 years old in January 2022. He passed away on 23 July 2022.

Family Life

Prince Bhisadej married his cousin, Mom Rajawongse Dajriraj Vorawan. She was the granddaughter of Prince Vorawannakara.

They had two daughters and one son:

  • Mom Rajawongse Bhavari Rajani
  • Mom Rajawongse Dhiradej Rajani

The prince and his family lived at Pramual Palace in Silom, Bangkok. However, they often stayed at his private home in Doi Ang Khang, Fang District, Chiang Mai Province. This was near the Royal Project Development and Agricultural Centre.

Prince Bhisadej received several important royal awards for his service:
