Bibbenluke is a small village in the Snowy Monaro Regional Council area. This region is in southern New South Wales, Australia. The village is found where the Monaro Highway crosses the Bombala River. Its name comes from an old Aboriginal word. It might mean "Big Lookout" or "Place of Birds."

History of Bibbenluke

In 1833, a man named Joshua John Moore started a large sheep farm here. He called it "Bibbenluke." This farm became very important. Other farms in the area were managed from Bibbenluke.

The village grew a lot during the 1800s. A Scottish pioneer named Benjamin Boyd also helped. He built a port called Boydtown in 1843. This port helped move goods from his farms in the region.

A school opened in Bibbenluke in 1871 for the growing community. By 1884, the village had many businesses. There were carpenters, a stonemason, and a blacksmith. There was also a hotel and at least two stores. An Anglican church used a community hall on the sheep farm. This building was later moved into the town in 1937.

On January 11, 1915, a special march came through Bibbenluke. It was called the "Men from Snowy River" march. This march encouraged men to join the army for World War I. Six men from Bibbenluke joined the Australian army that day. A similar march happened in April 1940 for World War II.

In 1977, the area around Bibbenluke joined with the Bombala Shire. In 1997, a new bridge was opened over the Bombala River. This bridge was important because it replaced the last old wooden bridge on the Monaro Highway. Later, in 2016, Bombala Shire became part of the larger Snowy Monaro Regional Council.

Bibbenluke Today

Today, Bibbenluke is a small community. It works closely with the bigger town of Bombala. Many public services for Bibbenluke are found in Bombala. The school is still open, but it had only 11 students in 2013.

The community hall is a main meeting place in the village. Other old buildings include the Anglican church. The original Bibbenluke Hotel is also still there. It has been changed into a private home. There is also a cemetery in the village.

The local economy mainly relies on farming and tourism. There are a few small businesses. These include the historic Ben Boyd Guesthouse. There is also the Bibbenluke Australian Stock Horse Stud, which breeds horses.
