Early Life and Education
Bibhusita Das was born and grew up in Cuttack, Odisha. Her father, Kurunakar Das, worked for a company called Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) before he retired. Bibhusita is the youngest of four sisters. She often says her parents were very supportive and encouraged all their daughters.
My mother and father always encouraged us to study and said there was no difference between a girl and a boy. All my three sisters are engineers. But I am the only marine engineer.
—Bibhusita Das
In 2007, Bibhusita finished her four-year Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) degree. She studied at C. V. Raman College of Engineering, Bhubaneshwar, in Odisha. There were seven girls in her engineering group, but Bibhusita was the only one who decided to work on ships.
Career as a Marine Engineer
After finishing her studies, Bibhusita worked as a lecturer for six months. Then, the Shipping Corporation of India hired her. She chose to work on board ships, which meant sailing the seas.
In 2012, she was promoted to a third engineer position at the Shipping Corporation of India. A year later, in 2013, Bibhusita Das was the Marine Engineer on a cargo ship called MV Biswamahal. When her ship arrived at Paradip Port from Australia, the Port Trust honored her.
Her job as a marine engineer can be very demanding. It often involves hard physical work to manage the ship's engines and other machinery. Voyages can last for many months, sometimes up to half a year! Her career has allowed her to travel to many different countries. She has visited places like Australia, South Africa, Turkey, Britain, and Germany.
