Biddle Memorial Hall is a very old and important building. It stands on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte. This city is located in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

The building was finished in 1883. It has 3 and a half stories and is made of brick and stone. It was built in a style called Romanesque. This style often uses round arches and strong, heavy walls.

Biddle Memorial Hall has a tall, fancy clock tower. The tower has a pointed roof made of slate. At each corner of the tower, there are small, round turrets. These are like mini-towers and are called bartizans.

A Special School Building

Biddle Memorial Hall was built for a very important reason. It was the main building for a school started in 1867. This school was created by the Presbyterian church. Its goal was to provide education for African-American students.

In 1923, the building was given its name, Biddle Memorial Hall. It was named to honor a kind person named Mary D. Biddle. She gave $1,400 to the school. This was a lot of money back then!
