The Bienal de Arte de Ponce is a big international art show. It happens in Ponce, Puerto Rico, every two years. That's what "biennial" means! The University of Puerto Rico at Ponce helps put on this event. Many people think it's the most important art show in Puerto Rico.

What You Can See at the Bienal
At the Bienal, you can see amazing art from many different artists. For example, in one recent show (from November 2014 to February 2015), over 120 artists shared their work. They included painters and sculptors.
The art styles are very diverse. You might see art that looks very real (called realism). Or you might see art that uses shapes and colors in new ways (called abstract art). Some art shows everyday life in Puerto Rico (called costumbrism).
Artists use many different materials. They paint on canvas or wood. They use acrylic paint, glass, or metal. You can also see art made with India ink, mixed materials, or even digital art.
The art is created using many tools. Some artists use watercolors or pencil. Others use oil paints. There are many different ways art is made at this event.
How the Bienal Started
This special art event began in 1986. It takes place at the Adelina Coppin Alvarado library. This library is part of the University of Puerto Rico at Ponce.
When it first started, the Bienal was a local art show. It was a way to show off the talents of artists from Ponce and southern Puerto Rico. But over the years, it has grown a lot. Now, artists from all over Puerto Rico, the United States, and the Dominican Republic come to share their art.
It's good to know that there's another art show in Ponce. It's called the Bienal Municipal de Arte de Ponce. That one started in 2011 and happens in different years than the Bienal de Arte de Ponce.
Honoring Artists
Since 1998, it's been a tradition to dedicate the Bienal to a visual artist. This means the event honors a special artist for their work.
For example, the 13th Bienal honored Roberto Colón Ocasio. He is a director at the university's Visual Arts Department. He also helped start the Bienal in 1986.
The 14th Bienal was dedicated to Ana Bassó Bruno. She is a sculptor. She used to be an art professor at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Puerto Rico.
Where the Art is Shown
The Bienal has always been held at the Adelina Coppin Alvarado Library. This library is located at the University of Puerto Rico at Ponce.
At the show, professional artists and art critics look at the artworks. They judge the art based on how good it is, not on who made it. They want to see the quality of the art itself.
Many talented artists show their work here. This includes well-known artists like Wichie Torres and Pedro "Peyo Tata" Pacheco. New artists also get a chance to show their talents at the Bienal.
