Big Creek Lake is a beautiful lake located inside Big Creek State Park in Polk County, Iowa. It's about two miles north of Polk City. This lake covers a large area of 814 acres. It's about 17.3 feet deep on average, but some parts can be as deep as 51 feet! Big Creek Lake was created to help protect Polk City from floods. It was also part of a bigger plan called the Saylorville project. Today, the lake is a popular spot for many fun outdoor activities. You can go fishing, have picnics, swim, boat, and even camp there.

Helping the Fish Population

Sometimes, fish populations can face challenges. From 2007 to 2010, many walleye and muskellunge were lost from the lake. To help these fish, a special barrier was put in place in 2012. This barrier helps protect the fish. It was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and local fishing groups. Their goal was to help more adult walleye and muskellunge live and grow in the lake.

Where Can You Launch Your Boat?

The lake has six different places where you can put your boat into the water. These are called boat ramps. Three ramps are on the west side of the lake. Two ramps are on the east side. There is also one special ramp called the hazel ramp at the upper end of the lake. This makes it easy for everyone to get their boats out on the water.
