Big Foot Prairie is located in Chemung Township. You can find it on U.S. Route 14, about 5 miles (8 km) north of Harvard. Interestingly, part of this community actually extends north into Walworth County, Wisconsin. There's even another CDP with the same name in Wisconsin!
History
Big Foot Prairie gets its name from a famous Native American leader named Big Foot. He was a leader of the Potawatomi people. His group used to live near a lake called Kishwauketoe, which is now known as Geneva Lake in Wisconsin.
In 1836, Big Foot's group was forced to leave their homes by the United States government. This was a common event during that time for many Native American tribes. The community of Big Foot Prairie once had its own post office, which first opened its doors on May 15, 1848.
