The Story Behind the Name: Big Lick
The name "Big Lick" has a really interesting history! Long ago, when the first settlers arrived in this area, they noticed something unusual. They saw many deer trails, and all of them led to the same spot.
When the settlers followed these trails, they discovered why. The deer were going to certain places to lick the ground! It turned out there were several "salt licks" in the area. A salt lick is a place where animals can find important minerals, like salt, that they need for their health.
This particular spot was the biggest and most popular salt lick for the deer. So, people started calling it "Big Lick."
Over time, a store opened in the area, which became a meeting place for everyone. By 1860, the community even had its own post office. The land where the community of Big Lick officially grew was originally owned by Jesse and Elizabeth Morton.
