The Big Sable River is a cool, 52-mile-long river in Michigan, United States. It starts in Lake County and flows through two different counties. This river is famous for its beautiful scenery and fun activities.

The Big Sable River: Where Does It Start?

The Big Sable River begins its journey in Lake County. It forms from a group of lakes called the Sauble Lakes. Another small stream, Bloody-Run Creek, also joins in to help form the river. From there, it flows west across the land.

Journey to Lake Michigan

The river travels through both Lake County and Mason County. Along its path, the river meets a dam. This dam creates a large, beautiful lake called Hamlin Lake. Hamlin Lake is a popular spot for boating and swimming.

After flowing out of Hamlin Lake, the Big Sable River continues its journey. It winds through Ludington State Park. This park is a wonderful place with sand dunes, forests, and beaches. Finally, the river empties into the huge Lake Michigan. Lake Michigan is one of the Great Lakes of North America.

What's in a Name?

You might see the river's name spelled in two ways. Some maps call it "Big Sable." Others call it "Big Sauble." Both names refer to the same river.

Fun on the River

While most of the Big Sable River is not easy to travel by boat, one part is super popular for tubing. This is the section between Hamlin Lake and Lake Michigan. People love to float down the river on tubes, enjoying the calm water and pretty views. It's a great way to relax on a warm day.

Fishing Adventures

The Big Sable River is known as an excellent place for fishing. Many different types of fish live in its waters. Anglers, or people who fish, come here hoping to catch a big one. It's a peaceful and rewarding activity for many visitors.
