Discovering Big Whiteshell Lake

Big Whiteshell Lake is a well-known destination for both locals and tourists. It offers many opportunities for outdoor adventures. People especially enjoy visiting during the summer months.

Fun Activities at the Lake

The lake is a perfect place for many exciting activities. You can go fishing and try to catch some fish. Many visitors also enjoy hiking on the trails around the lake. These trails let you explore the natural beauty of the park. Besides fishing and hiking, there are lots of other summer activities to enjoy. These might include swimming, boating, or just relaxing by the water.

The Lake's History

The area around Big Whiteshell Lake has an interesting past. Work on a road leading to the lake started way back in the 1930s. Workers began building a path through the Whiteshell Forest Reserve. Their goal was to connect the area from Rennie to Green Lake.

Camp Alloway's Beginnings

More development happened around the lake starting in 1957. The Manitoba Scout Association was looking for a bigger place for their scout camps. They needed more space because more young people were joining. The government of Manitoba helped them out. They offered a large piece of land, about 118 acres (48 ha) (about 48 hectares), at the southern end of Big Whiteshell Lake. This is how Camp Alloway was created. It became a special place for scouts to learn and have adventures.

A Musical Connection

Big Whiteshell Lake even has a connection to music! A famous entertainer from Manitoba, Larry Clark, spent time here. He was known by his stage name, Uncle Smokey. While working in a fire lookout tower at the lake, he wrote several fun campfire songs. These songs were often silly and perfect for singing around a campfire.

Big Whiteshell Lake continues to be a cherished part of Whiteshell Provincial Park. It offers a mix of natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and a touch of local history.
