It sits at the base of a small group of hills also known as the Bijou Hills. You can find it about 1.2 miles northeast of South Dakota Highway 50. It is also about 18 miles south of Interstate 90.
History of Bijou Hills
Bijou Hills was first started in 1875. It got its name from the hills nearby. A post office was opened in Bijou Hills in 1877. This post office served the community for many years. It finally closed down in 1957.
In 1976, something special happened for Bijou Hills. A nearby area was named a National Natural Landmark. This was done by the National Park Service. Being a National Natural Landmark means the area has unique natural features. It is considered very important for its natural history.
