About Bill Barlow
Bill Barlow was born in Galt, Ontario, on February 20, 1931. Galt is now known as Cambridge, Ontario. He went to Galt Business College to study. Later, he became the president of a company that moved goods by truck.
His Political Journey
Starting in Local Politics
Before becoming an MPP, Bill Barlow was a city alderman for ten years. An alderman is like a city council member. They help make decisions for their local community.
Running for Provincial Parliament
Barlow first tried to become a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) in 1977. He ran in the Cambridge area. He lost that election to Monty Davidson, who was already an MPP for the New Democratic Party.
In the 1981 election, Barlow ran again. This time, he won! He defeated Monty Davidson and became the MPP for Cambridge. His party, the Progressive Conservatives, won enough seats to form a majority government. This means they had more than half the seats in the legislature. As an MPP, Barlow supported the leaders of his party, Bill Davis and Frank Miller.
Re-election and Opposition
Barlow was elected again in the 1985 election. He won against Alec Dufresne from the New Democratic Party. In this election, the Progressive Conservatives did not win a majority. They formed a minority government, meaning they had the most seats but not more than half. Soon after, they lost power in the legislature.
When his party was no longer in charge, Barlow became a "critic." This means he spoke for his party on certain topics. He was the critic for Transportation and Communications, and also for Small Business. He would question the government's plans in these areas.
End of His Time in Parliament
In the 1987 election, the Progressive Conservatives lost many seats. Bill Barlow finished third in the Cambridge area. He lost to Mike Farnan of the New Democratic Party. After this, he was no longer an MPP.
Later in Life
In 2005, Bill Barlow was asked to join the Cambridge Art Theatre Management Committee. He passed away at his home on July 5, 2020, at the age of 89.
