William Joseph Holland was an American track and field athlete. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on March 3, 1874. He passed away in Malden, Massachusetts, on November 20, 1930. William Holland is best known for winning a silver medal at the 1900 Summer Olympics.

William Holland's Olympic Journey

William Holland was 26 years old when he competed in the 1900 Summer Olympics. These Olympic Games were held in Paris, France. At the time, Holland was a medical student at Georgetown University.

Winning a Silver Medal

Holland competed in the men's 400-meter dash race. He ran very well and earned a silver medal. His time was 49.6 seconds. He was incredibly close to winning the gold medal. He finished just 0.2 seconds behind his American teammate, Maxie Long.

The 200-Meter Dash

In the 200-meter dash, Holland showed his speed. He won his first race, called a semifinal heat, with a time of 24.0 seconds. This allowed him to move on to the final race. In the exciting final, he finished in fourth place. His estimated time was 22.9 seconds. This was the same time as the bronze medalist, Stan Rowley. It was also only 0.1 seconds slower than the second-place runner, Norman Pritchard.

The 60-Meter Dash

Holland also took part in the 60-meter dash event. He placed third in his first-round race. This meant he did not move forward to the final race for this event.
