William T. Woodson (born July 16, 1917 – died February 22, 2017) was a talented American actor. He worked in movies, on stage, in radio, and especially as a voice actor.

Many people remember his deep, clear voice. He was famous for narrating the radio show This is Your FBI. He also narrated the TV series The Invaders. Kids especially know him as the narrator for the popular cartoon Super Friends. He even voiced the opening of The Odd Couple TV show.

Bill Woodson's Acting Journey

Starting on Stage

Before becoming a professional actor, Bill Woodson spent almost ten years acting in plays. His very first play was in 1928.

In 1943, Bill Woodson made his big debut on Broadway. He played Lowell Denton in a play called Harriet. He was a very flexible actor. He could perform well in many different kinds of roles. For example, he played Montano in William Shakespeare's Othello.

From 1946 to 1947, he played his most famous stage role. He was Le Bret in Cyrano de Bergerac. He also appeared in other plays like The Seven Year Itch.

In 1947, he was one of the first actors chosen for the new Actors Studio. This was a special place for actors to train.

His Voice on the Radio

Bill Woodson was the narrator for a crime drama radio series. It was called This is Your FBI. He narrated it from 1948 to 1953 on ABC radio.

He also used his voice for many characters on other radio shows. These included Suspense and Family Theater.

Movies and TV Shows

Woodson had a small role in the 1953 sci-fi movie. It was called The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. He played a newscaster. He also appeared as Sergeant Ed Blankey in the TV series This Man Dawson.

In 1967, he became the narrator for the TV show The Invaders. He also narrated for NFL Films, which makes movies about football.

In the 1970s, Woodson's TV work included the opening narration for The Odd Couple. He also narrated the pilot episode of The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams. He even had a short appearance on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Later, he was a voice-over announcer for WKRP In Cincinnati. You could hear his voice inviting people to stay tuned. He also did other voice roles on the show.

In the 1980s, he narrated two important miniseries. These were The Winds of War and War and Remembrance. He helped explain the big historical events in these shows.

The Voice of Super Friends

William Woodson is most famous for his work on the Super Friends cartoon series. He was the main narrator for the show. He also voiced extra characters.

He narrated over 100 episodes of Super Friends. His most famous line was often heard when the show switched scenes. He would say, "Meanwhile, at the Hall of Justice..."

In an interview, he once explained his special way of saying "super." He said it as "syuper" instead of "sooper." He learned this in high school to sound more fancy. He tried to sound like the actor Ronald Colman.

Woodson also narrated Battle of the Planets. He voiced characters like J. Jonah Jameson in the 1981 Spider-Man cartoon. He also played Namor the Submariner and Dr. Strange in Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends.

Later, he was a guest voice on many other cartoons. These included Garfield and Friends, The Jetsons, and Tiny Toon Adventures.

Other Cool Work

In 1966, he played the Secretary of War in three episodes of F Troop.

He also narrated official films for the NFL Films. He narrated Super Bowl II and the famous 1967 NFL Championship Game. This game is also known as the "Ice Bowl."

In the 1990s, Woodson was the voice for Wawa convenience store commercials. These ads were funny and mentioned events from 1964.

From 2004 to 2010, he lent his deep voice to commercials for the Minnesota Twins baseball team. His voice could also be heard narrating many Disney read-along books.

Personal Life

In 1959, Bill Woodson married actress Darlene Conley. They later divorced in 1966.

His Passing

Bill Woodson passed away on February 22, 2017. He was 99 years old.
