William A. Wright (born April 4, 1936 – died February 19, 2021) was an American golfer. He made history by becoming the first African-American to win a major event from the United States Golf Association (USGA). This big win was the 1959 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.

Early Life and College Golf

Bill Wright was born in Kansas City, Missouri. As he grew up, he lived in different cities. These included Portland, Oregon, Seattle, Washington, and Los Angeles, California.

He loved golf and played it in college. He attended Western Washington College of Education. In 1960, he won a big college golf title. This was the NAIA Men's Golf Championship individual award.

Making History in Golf

The year 1959 was a turning point for Bill Wright. He competed in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. This is a major tournament run by the USGA. The USGA is the main organization for golf in the United States.

Bill Wright won this championship. This made him the first African-American to win any USGA event. It was a huge moment for golf and for civil rights. His victory showed that talent could overcome barriers.

Professional Golf Career
