Billimari is a small town and area in the Central West part of New South Wales, Australia. It's located in the Cowra Shire region. Billimari is about 323 kilometers (200 miles) west of Sydney, the capital city. It's also about 23 kilometers (14 miles) north of the town of Cowra.
Billimari's Story
The name "Billimari" comes from the local Wiradjuri language. It means "plenty of water." This name likely describes the area's natural features.
Changes Over Time
In 1923, a large silo was built in Billimari. Silos are tall structures used to store grain, like wheat. This silo changed things a lot for the town. Farmers no longer needed to take their wheat to other towns.
Around the same time, nearby towns like Canowindra and Cowra started to grow bigger. This meant Billimari became less busy. The town's hall, a community building, began to get old and worn out.
Community Spirit
In the early 1970s, people in Billimari decided to fix their hall. They worked together to make it new again. In 1976, a group called the "Billican" was started. This group puts on plays and holds events. They raise money for good causes in the community.
The Billican group has done a lot for Billimari. In 1994, they won an Australia Day Award. This award was for their great service to the community.
Modern Connections
Billimari got its first automatic telephone exchange on September 16, 1971. This made it easier for people to make phone calls. On November 19, 1973, Madeline Forgie became the town's postmistress. She was in charge of the post office.
The town also had a railway station. It was part of the Eugowra railway line. However, this railway line is now closed.
Local Wildlife
Billimari is also home to a special type of frog. It's called the green and golden bell frog (Litoria aurea). This frog is also known as the green bell frog or green and golden swamp frog.
