The Story of Billings Studio Theatre

How It All Began

The theatre company started a long time ago. Their very first show was There's Always Juliet. That was way back in 1953! For a while, they didn't have their own building.

Finding a Home

In 1963, the group decided they needed a permanent place. They moved into an old church in downtown Billings. But five years later, the church building was no longer safe. So, the theatre group started working hard to build a brand new home.

A New Theatre Opens

In 1971, Billings Studio Theatre opened its doors. Their new theatre was in a central part of Billings. It's located right next to the Rocky Mountain College campus. It's important to know that Billings Studio Theatre is its own organization. It is not run by Rocky Mountain College. It is a separate non-profit group.

What Shows Do They Put On?

Main Stage Productions

Every year, Billings Studio Theatre puts on many exciting shows. They usually produce four plays. They also present four musicals each year. These are called their Main Stage productions.

Popular Past Shows

Some of the popular shows they have performed include The Descendants and Beauty and the Beast. They have also staged Frozen and ELF. Other fun productions were Shrek and Murder on the Orient Express.

A Big Achievement

In 2013, Billings Studio Theatre made history. They were the first community theatre in Montana. They put on a full version of the famous musical Les Misérables. This was a very big and exciting show for them.

Other Performances

Besides their own shows, other groups use the theatre too. Rocky Mountain College often presents one or two productions there each year. Billings Studio Theatre also has a special children's theatre. It's called The Growing Stage.

Community and Volunteers

People Who Help Out

Many people help make the theatre run. About 500 people volunteer at the theatre every year. These volunteers help with everything. They build sets, make costumes, and work backstage. They also help with tickets and seating. Their hard work makes all the shows possible.
