Billingsville is a small, unincorporated community located in Union Township, within Union County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own official local government like a city or town.
A Look Back at Billingsville's History
Billingsville has a past that shows how communities grew in Indiana. It was named after the Billings family, who were early settlers in the area.
Early Services: The Post Office
A post office was opened in Billingsville way back in 1833. This was a very important service for people living there. It helped them send and receive letters and packages. The post office served the community for many years. It finally closed its doors in 1903.
Learning in Billingsville: The Schools
Education was also a key part of Billingsville's history. In 1870, a one-room schoolhouse was built for the local children. This was a common type of school at the time. Later, in 1926, a bigger, two-story school replaced the old one-room building. This new school helped educate students until 1953.
