Billups is a small place in Mississippi, a state in the United States. It is known as an "unincorporated community". This means it does not have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it is part of Lowndes County.

Where is Billups Located?

Billups is found in the western part of Lowndes County. It is west of a larger city called Columbus. It is also just south of the Golden Triangle Regional Airport.

The official name for this area is Billups. However, it has also been known by other names. These include Billups Gate and Billups Station. These names were recorded by the United States Geological Survey.

A Look at Billups' History

Billups has an interesting past. It was once the location of a very large farm. This farm was called a plantation. It belonged to a person named Colonel Thomas C. Billups. His plantation covered about 2,000 acres of land.

Billups as a Railroad Stop

In the past, Billups was a special kind of stop for trains. It was called a "flag stop" on the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. This meant that trains would only stop there if someone waved a flag to get on. Or, they would stop if a passenger on the train wanted to get off there.

Early Industries in Billups

Billups was also important for its natural resources. In 1921, the first oil well in Lowndes County was drilled here. This was a big event for the area. People also shipped materials like gravel and logs from Billups. These were important goods for building and other uses.

The Billups Post Office

For a short time, Billups had its own post office. It operated under the name Billups from 1901 to 1906. This allowed people in the community to send and receive mail.
