Early Music Career
In 1932, Billy Banks made some important recordings. He worked with many famous jazz musicians. These included Red Allen on trumpet and Tommy Dorsey on trombone. Other great artists like Pee Wee Russell, Joe Sullivan, Zutty Singleton, and Fats Waller also played with him.
Many of these musicians were from Luis Russell's band. Other white musicians were brought in by producer Irving Mills. For a while, people thought another singer, Una Mae Carlisle, sang on these records. But it was actually Billy Banks himself.
Touring the World
Billy Banks also worked as a performer and singer with Luis Russell. Later, he joined Noble Sissle's group. He performed in cabaret shows for Billy Rose.
In the 1950s, Billy Banks traveled a lot. He toured across Europe, Australia, and East Asia. One of his last recordings was made in Denmark in 1954. He recorded with a musician named Cy Laurie.
Later in the 1950s, Billy Banks moved to Japan. He lived there until he passed away in Tokyo in 1967.
