Biltine Prefecture (which in Arabic is إقليم بلتن) was one of the 14 main administrative areas in the country of Chad. It was located in the eastern part of Chad. The capital city of Biltine Prefecture was also called Biltine.

Biltine Prefecture was a large area. It covered about 46,850 square kilometers. To give you an idea, that's roughly the size of a country like Estonia. In 1993, about 184,807 people lived there.

What Was Biltine Prefecture?

A prefecture is like a big region or province within a country. It helps the government manage different parts of the nation. Biltine Prefecture was one of these important regions in Chad. It helped organize local services and administration for the people living there.

Location in Chad

Biltine Prefecture was located in the eastern part of Chad. Chad is a country in Central Africa. It is known for its diverse landscapes, from deserts in the north to savannas in the south. The prefecture's eastern location meant it was closer to Chad's border with Sudan.

Key Facts and Figures

Biltine Prefecture existed for almost 40 years. It was established in 1960, the same year Chad gained its independence. It continued to be an administrative division until 1999. On September 1, 1999, Chad reorganized its prefectures into new administrative units called regions. This change meant Biltine Prefecture no longer existed in its original form.

  • Am Zoer

The Amdang Language

An interesting fact about this area is related to language. The Amdang language is spoken by some people in this part of Chad. Sometimes, this language is even called "Biltine" because of its connection to the prefecture. This shows how important local places can be to the identity of a language and its speakers.
