Bing Mi (sometimes called Bing Mi!) is a popular Chinese restaurant in Portland, Oregon. It first started as a food cart that specialized in a tasty Chinese street food called jianbing. Later, in 2022, a new restaurant called Bing Mi Dumpling and Noodle Bar opened. This new spot focuses on delicious Northern Chinese noodles and dumplings.
What is Bing Mi?
Bing Mi began in 2014 as a small food cart in Portland, Oregon. It was started by Tim Harris, Alisa Grandy, and Neal Grandy. Jacky Ren also became an owner later on.
The food cart quickly became famous for its special dish, jianbing. At the time, Bing Mi was the only place in Portland where you could find this authentic Chinese street food! Jianbing is like a savory crepe, often filled with eggs, crispy crackers, and sauces. You could even add extra toppings like bacon, roast duck, or Spam to your jianbing.
Bing Mi's Journey and TV Fame
In 2017, the owners planned to open a second food cart in another part of Portland. The restaurant even caught the eye of famous TV host Andrew Zimmern. He visited Bing Mi for an episode of his show, The Zimmern List, which aired on the Food Network.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Bing Mi helped its community. They donated money from their sales to people affected by local wildfires. They also worked with a program called Adopt a Restaurant to provide meals for people in need.
New Location and New Restaurant
In 2020, Jacky Ren bought out the other owners and took over Bing Mi. The original food cart moved to a new spot called the Nob Hill Food Carts in northwest Portland. This move happened after their first location closed down.
In 2021, Ren announced plans to open a new, bigger restaurant. This new place, called Bing Mi Dumpling and Noodle Bar, opened in January 2022. It's also located in the Northwest District of Portland. This restaurant offers a wider menu, focusing on different kinds of Northern Chinese noodles and dumplings. Sometimes, staff from the food cart even help out at the noodle restaurant during very hot weather.
Bing Mi has also worked with other local businesses, like Bark City BBQ, to create special food items.
