Andrew Scott Zimmern (born July 4, 1961) is an American chef, restaurant owner, television host, and author. He is well-known for creating and hosting the Travel Channel TV series Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern. In this show, he travels the world trying unique and sometimes unusual foods.

Andrew Zimmern has hosted many other shows, including Bizarre Foods America, Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations, and Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre World. He also has a cooking show on YouTube called Andrew Zimmern Cooks. For his work on Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, he won the prestigious James Beard Foundation Award four times.

In November 2018, Zimmern opened a Chinese restaurant called Lucky Cricket in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

Early Life and Career

Andrew Zimmern was born in 1961 in New York City. He grew up in a Jewish family. From a young age, he was inspired by the famous chef James Beard, who hosted open houses that Andrew attended with his father. This helped spark his interest in cooking.

He started his cooking training when he was 14 years old. He went to the Dalton School and later graduated from Vassar College. After college, he worked in several top restaurants in New York City. He was either the main chef or the general manager. He also taught classes about how to manage and design restaurants.

In 1992, Zimmern moved to Minnesota. He later became the main chef at Café Un Deux Trois in Minneapolis. His cooking there received very high praise from many magazines and newspapers. Andrew Zimmern stopped working in daily restaurant operations in 1997.

Writing and Food Events

Andrew Zimmern is a writer for Mpls. St. Paul Magazine and Delta Sky Magazine. He has also written for many other magazines around the world. He used to be a spokesman for SuperTarget, sharing his love for different kinds of foods with shoppers.

Before his TV shows, Zimmern was popular on the radio. His shows like Chowhounds and Food Court With Andrew Zimmern were very popular in the Twin Cities area.

He also worked as a food reporter for Fox TV station KMSP-TV. He appeared on other TV shows like Rebecca's Garden and Tip-ical Mary Ellen, where he shared cooking tips.

Zimmern has been a guest chef at many charity events and food festivals. These include Food and Wine Magazine's Aspen Festival and events at the James Beard House. He has also appeared on the Food Network's Best Of... and NBC's Today Show.

He often gives talks to cooking groups around the world. In 2002, he was invited to China to travel, give talks, and show how to cook Chinese cuisine.

Andrew Zimmern has written several books. His book The Bizarre Truth came out in 2009. It shares his food and travel stories. He also wrote Andrew Zimmern's Field Guide to Exceptionally Weird, Wild, and Wonderful Foods in 2012. His latest book is a children's series called Alliance of World Explorers, Volume 1: AZ and the Lost City of Ophir, which won an award in 2019.

Travel Channel Shows

Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern first aired on the Travel Channel in November 2006. In this series, Zimmern has visited many countries and states, trying local foods. The show won two CableFax awards in 2009.

In 2009, Zimmern hosted a show called Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre World. He filmed episodes in different countries and states for this show.

Andrew Zimmern has also appeared on other food shows. He was a guest on No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain in 2007. He also appeared on Man v. Food with Adam Richman in Minneapolis, where he introduced Richman to a traditional Nordic dish called lutefisk.

In January 2012, another show called Bizarre Foods America started. In this series, Zimmern explored different cities in the United States. He tried local foods and learned about the ways of life in those places.

Awards and Recognition

Andrew Zimmern has won several important awards for his work.

  • In May 2010, he won the James Beard Award for Outstanding TV Food Personality.
  • He won this award again in 2012, 2013, and 2017.

His online series, Toyota's Appetite for Life, also won an Effie Award in 2010.

Zimmern is also an entrepreneur-in-residence at Babson College, where he shares his business knowledge.
