UPN (which originally stood for the United Paramount Network) was a television network in the United States. It broadcasted shows to over 200 areas. UPN was owned by CBS Corporation, which also owns the larger CBS network.
UPN stopped broadcasting on September 15, 2006. It was replaced by The CW. The CW was created by CBS Corporation and Warner Bros.. Warner Bros. also owned another network called The WB. Both UPN and The WB closed down in 2006. They then joined together to create The CW.
What Was UPN?
UPN was a special kind of TV channel. It was called a "broadcast television network." This means it sent its shows over the air. People could watch UPN using an antenna. It was available across the United States and in Canada.
How UPN Started
UPN started on January 16, 1995. It was created by two companies. One was United Television/Chris-Craft Television. The other was Paramount Pictures. Paramount Pictures is famous for making movies. It was part of a bigger company called Viacom.
Who Owned UPN?
Over the years, UPN had different owners.
- From 1995, it was owned by United Television/Chris-Craft Television.
- Later, Viacom became a co-owner.
- By 2000, Viacom owned UPN completely.
- In 2006, CBS Corporation became the owner.
The End of UPN
UPN stopped broadcasting on August 31, 2006, for some stations. It officially closed on September 15, 2006. When UPN closed, it was replaced by two new networks:
- The CW: This network was a new project. It combined shows and stations from UPN and The WB.
- MyNetworkTV: Some stations that used to show UPN programs started showing MyNetworkTV instead.
