Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Bingongina (also called Pinkangarna) are an Aboriginal group from the Northern Territory in Australia. Some people think the name "Bingongina" might just be another name for the Mudburra people.

Where the Bingongina Lived

A researcher named Norman Tindale estimated the Bingongina's traditional lands. These lands were mostly sandy deserts with dunes. They covered about 9,700 square miles (25,000 km2) (or 25,000 square kilometers).

Their country was located west of Lake Woods. It was also east of the upper part of the Victoria River. The southwestern edge of their land was near Winnecke Creek. This creek was known as Morerinju to the Bingongina people.

How Bingongina Families Were Organized

In 1904, two researchers, Spencer and Gillen, studied the Bingongina. They believed that families passed down their group identity through the father's side. They also described two main family groups, called Wiliuku and Liaraku.

However, another researcher named R. H. Mathews had a different idea. He thought that family connections were actually passed down through the mother's side.
