Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Pinikura people, also known as Binigura, are an Aboriginal Australian group from the Pilbara region in Western Australia. They have a rich history and deep connection to their traditional lands.

Pinikura Country and Land

The Pinikura people traditionally lived on about 3,100 square miles (8,000 square kilometers) of land. This area was mainly around the Ashburton River, stretching from Mount Tom Price to Kooline. Their northern border was near Mount Amy and Urandy. To the east, their land reached the lower parts of the Hardey River, close to Ashburton Downs.

Recognizing Native Title

The Puutu Kunti Kurrama (PKK) and Pinikura (P) peoples are two distinct but related groups. They worked together to claim their rights to their traditional lands and waters. On December 2, 2015, their rights were officially recognized. This recognition covered about 10,888 square kilometers (4,204 square miles) of land between Onslow and Tom Price. The PKKP Aboriginal Corporation now helps manage these lands for both groups.

Pinikura Language

The Pinikura language is closely related to the Thalanyji language.

Pinikura Social Life

Even though the Kurrama and Pinikura are separate groups, they share many common laws and customs. They also work together to protect and share the land and its resources.

Juukan Gorge Incident

In May 2020, the Pinikura people, along with the Puutu Kunti Kurrama (together known as PKKP), were very upset by an event at Juukan Gorge. A mining company called Rio Tinto destroyed a very old and important sacred cave there. This cave was a significant heritage site for the Pinikura and Kurrama peoples, showing thousands of years of their history and culture. Its destruction caused great sadness and concern.
