Birmingham was a small town, called a borough, located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. It was on the South Side of what is now the big city of Pittsburgh. This borough isn't around anymore; it became part of Pittsburgh in 1872.
What Was Birmingham Borough?
Birmingham was officially created as a borough on April 10, 1826. It was carved out of a larger area called St. Clair Township. The borough covered the area between what are now South 6th and South 17th Streets in Pittsburgh's South Side Flats.
How Birmingham Got Its Name
The town of Birmingham was first planned in 1811 by a man named Dr. Nathaniel Bedford. He was the son-in-law of John Ormsby, an important person in Pittsburgh's early history. Dr. Bedford named the new settlement after his hometown, Birmingham in England.
Birmingham's Neighbors and Its End
Over time, other boroughs grew up around Birmingham. To its west was South Pittsburgh, created in 1848. To its east was East Birmingham, which started in 1849. These three boroughs, along with other nearby towns, eventually joined together. In 1872, they all became part of the growing city of Pittsburgh.
The famous Birmingham Bridge in Pittsburgh is named after this former borough. However, the bridge is actually located where the old East Birmingham borough used to be.
