Birrong is a suburb located in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It's about 22 kilometers southwest of the main city center. Birrong is part of the City of Canterbury-Bankstown local government area.

Birrong's History

The name Birrong comes from an Aboriginal word. It means star. This name was chosen for the suburb around 1927.

One of the first settlers in the area was Joseph Hyde Potts. He received land here in 1835. The nearby area of Potts Hill is named after him.

More people started moving to Birrong after 1928. This was when the railway line opened, making travel easier. Birrong Park used to flood often. During the Great Depression (1929–1934), people worked to drain the park. This helped create jobs during a tough time. The local post office opened in 1955.
