The Birth of a New Man (in Spanish: Nacimiento de un Hombre Nuevo) is a famous monument in Seville, Spain. People often call it el huevo de Colón ("the Columbus' egg"). This huge artwork was created by the artist Zurab Tsereteli.
The monument shows a giant statue of Christopher Columbus. He is partly wrapped inside a shape that looks like an egg. This special design makes the statue very unique.
About the Statue
A Gift from Moscow
The Birth of a New Man was a gift from the city of Moscow in Russia to Seville. It was given to celebrate a very important event. This was the Columbus Quincentenary, which means the 500th anniversary of Columbus arriving in the Caribbean in 1492.
How Big Is It?
This monument is truly enormous! The whole sculpture stands about 42 to 45 meters (138 to 148 feet) tall. The figure of Columbus himself is 32 meters (105 feet) high. This makes it one of the tallest statues in all of Spain.
Where to Find It
You can find the Birth of a New Man in the Park of San Jerónimo in Seville. It was officially opened in 1995. Elena de Borbón and Jaime de Marichalar were there for the opening ceremony.
