Biruaslum facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Biruaslum (also called Bioruaslam) is a cool, tall rock island in the Barra Isles of Scotland. It's like a giant pillar of rock sticking out of the sea! This amazing place is found west of another island called Vatersay.

Biruaslum is about 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) from the closest road. It stands very tall, reaching about 72 meters (236 feet) high. On its southern side, there are the remains of an old fort built a very long time ago.

Biruaslum has steep cliffs on its eastern side. These cliffs face Vatersay and act like natural walls, protecting the old fort from the sea.

The Fort's Strong Walls

The people who lived here long ago built a very strong wall. This wall is about 2 meters (6.5 feet) wide and can be up to 3 meters (10 feet) high in some spots! It forms a large, half-circle area. The wall is about 50 meters (164 feet) long. You can see it best preserved at its southeastern end.

Inside the Fort

Right next to the wall, on the uphill side, are the remains of a small, oval-shaped building. This building is about 19 square meters (205 square feet) in size.

Who Lived Here?

The way this fort is built is similar to other old structures found in Ireland. These types of forts are often from the Iron Age. However, when archaeologists looked for clues at Biruaslum, they only found pieces of pottery from an even older time called the Neolithic period. This means people were living here thousands of years ago!
